Imagine if your home was grown from mushrooms

Structurally insulating panels provide an easier installation and greater climate benefits than traditional steel structural systems. However, insulation used for these systems is typically plastic-based. This project investigated the future of mushroom mycelium as an insulating material that is capable of self-binding to the structural elements.

Our analysis revealed the potential for this material to replace conventional building materials in low-rise buildings. We found that spent mycelium blocks from mushroom farmers represent an untapped potential resource for thermal and structural performance.
